The bar where you can turn off the pc, adjust the volume, see your email etc. has dissapeared. is there any way to bring it back?

I ask this in all sincerity. Did you select a "Hide panel" option at any point? If you hover your mouse near the edges of the screen (particularly the tip) do you see anything pop up? I only ask this because I worked at a helpdesk for a while, and want to rule out the simplest answer first. – Argusvision Oct 17 '12 at 12:59
Also, is the entire bar (panel) gone? or just the buttons (Indicator Applets). – Argusvision Oct 17 '12 at 13:04

Your looking for the indicator applet. Just right-click on the top panel of your screen, select "Add" and look for indicator applet.
