i'm facing a strange problem about which - googling- i didn't find any solution.

This is the issue. I've restored windows 7 trough its hidden partition then i installed kubuntu 12.04 which didn't installed the grub loader. Hence via the same usb-live i used boot-repair which have found all the system that are:

  • kubuntu + its recovery mode
  • windows 7 /dev/sda1
  • windows 7 /dev/sda2
  • windows 7 recovery

I don't know why i have got 2 windows loader, but they seem (to me) to load the same system. I tryied to see what is there written in the grub.cfg and it seems that the "root" directory for the two system is different even thought when i load from sda1 i got "Avvio windows" (Italian language that i choose) and on sda2 i got "start windows" in the english language when the splash screen load.

Can you PLEASE help me removing one of the two entry? i can not really see them, i want only one but i don't know how to act..

Thank you very much indeed.

Lorenzo

I am confused. You say they seem to load the same system - then you say one is Italian, the other is English. Care to clarify? Where is your Windows System folder? – Takkat Oct 13 '12 at 10:59

Have you tried running

$ sudo update-grub

if you want to keep the Italian entry, just:

  1. delete (or rename) the bootmgr file and /boot folder located in the sda2 partition
  2. boot Ubuntu, open a terminal, and type sudo update-grub

Okay, i've just come to this curiosity as well. Here's what i found out.

If you are not sure which one to pick to boot into window. Then boot your trusty ubuntu first.

And then go to: Dash > Disks

You should have something as similar as: my snapshot

In this picture, clearly mine is sda2, thus i should choose: windows 7 /dev/sda2 to boot up my window 7.

and sda1 would be the bootable window 7 recovery.

kudos~
