What’s your recommendation on drive partitioning schemes for a desktop and home server?

I need to install ubuntu 12.04 as i messed up my OS. So can someone please suggest what are the best settings for Partitions.

I mean should I install the Ubuntu on simple one partition. Because in this case I guess I have to install all the packages/applications everytime I install the fresh OS which is a headache.

Is there a way that I can retain all the applications on New installed OS ????

My HDD size is 120 GB

The 'OS' that you messed up is ubuntu? – Evandro Silva Oct 11 '12 at 15:13
Ya, I was playing with compiz too much without even knowing what the changed settings will have effect. I lost GUI but I restored it using unity --reset. But after this i saw that some apps were menu entries. So i thought why not install new ubuntu with all new settings. Other benefit will be learning. Thats y I gave it a shot. – OmiPenguin Oct 11 '12 at 21:24

I assume you use all of the partitions:

  1. /dev/sda1 Ubuntu Boot 10GB, ext4 mount point /boot , primary
  2. /dev/sda2 Ubuntu Main 40GB, ext4 mount point / , primary
  3. /dev/sda2 Swap 4GB, extended

And data reserved:

  1. /dev/sda3 Data 66GB, ext4 or NTFS, primary or extended, whatever you want.
