I have a Vostro 2520 and not sure how to enable wireless on my machine. The details are given below, would appreciate any pointers to resolving this issue.

@Joe - your rfkill results say you have a hard-lock - this means there is a physical switch (keyboard Fn type switch, bios, or slider switch) that is turned off. Can you check this please and report back? –  fossfreedom Nov 1 '12 at 11:18

To enable wireless, I went to System Settings > Network > Wireless and turned it ON. But this is on 12.04. –  user116701 Dec 25 '12 at 16:06

Try this:

sudo apt-get install firmware-b43-installer
sudo apt-get remove bcmwl-kernel-source

It worked for me on a Dell Inspiron 6400 with the Broadcom wifi chip.

How do I know what chip am using right now –  Joe Oct 11 '12 at 9:43

Processing triggers for man-db ... Setting up b43-fwcutter (1:015-9) ... Setting up firmware-b43-installer (1:015-9) ... No chroot environment found. Starting normal installation –  Joe Oct 11 '12 at 9:44

I tried pressing Fn+F2 after this, but it doesn't seem to have any effect. –  Joe Oct 11 '12 at 9:45

To learn what chip is installed on your pc type lspci in a terminal and look for the wireless lan line. –  To Do Oct 11 '12 at 13:21

I don't see anything for the wireless lan line, I have modified the question with lspci output –  Joe Oct 12 '12 at 5:11

Edit the file /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf and in the end type :

blacklist acer_wmi

Reboot and you’re done. If you’re doing it entirely from the GUI, then editing the file could be done by pressing ALT+F2 (this would open a “Run” window) and typing there gksu gedit /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf then add this line below

rmmod dell_laptop

I am not using acer, should I still blacklist it –  Joe Oct 11 '12 at 9:43

I use lenovo laptop, and blacklist acer_wmi. The first time I install ubuntu hardy, it works, the second time I install, it doesn't work. I think you should try it, if it doesn't work, let remove it. –  Hoai-Thu Vuong Oct 19 '12 at 3:30

Open terminal. Just press Ctrl+Alt+T on your keyboard to open Terminal. When it opens, run the command below.

sudo rfkill unblock all

doesn't seem to have any effect on the output. –  Joe Oct 12 '12 at 5:09

list the output of sudo iwconfig –  Moheet Oct 12 '12 at 5:47

I did some googling on your wifi card, the Broadcom 4365. I found this answer, maybe it will offer some hints: Broadcom 4365 wireless driver with 3.4 / 3.5 kernel Good luck, - R.R.G

Whilst this may theoretically answer the question, it would be preferable to include the essential parts of the answer here, and provide the link for reference. –  Eliah Kagan Dec 25 '12 at 18:05
