I have my own OpenVPN server that works, however every time I run the client from the terminal I'm stuck with it open -- if I close it the connection will drop. I tried forking it with & however that won't work as you're required to input the username and password for the server.

Does anyone know how to solve this?

How are you trying to connect? Can you paste the sample command? –  devav2 Oct 8 '12 at 17:47
sudo openvpn --config ~/.vpn/client.ovpn –  Alex Oct 8 '12 at 17:50
Does it drop the connection if you background it manually after passing in your credentials with ^Z and then issue bg to bash? –  taneli Oct 9 '12 at 11:37
