What are the first thing you do when you set up a new Ubuntu instance.

sudo apt-get install <everything you need> For start, might be things like vim, emacs, gcc, python3, vlc, gnome-tweak-tool, compizconfig-setting-manager, etc – piyush Oct 6 '12 at 16:31
yeah, depends on what you want to do with it. – Evandro Silva Oct 6 '12 at 16:32

-1 This is way too broad a question, sorry. For example, I have no use for your 'Install C and C++ Compilers' answer below. I don't use it and going to make a cup of tea would be a higher priority. – Tom Brossman Oct 6 '12 at 16:33
I'm just looking for preferences: Do you disable the root account? What kind of changes do you make to the .bashrc? etc... – jwerre Oct 6 '12 at 16:34

It will never be possible to give a complete answer, the format of your question simply does not fit here. It's difficult to tell what is being asked here. This question is ambiguous, vague, incomplete, overly broad, or rhetorical and cannot be reasonably answered in its current form. For help clarifying this question so that it can be reopened, see the FAQ.

This assumes the user a) is a developer b) uses Git, as opposed to bzr. brz is a better choice for Ubuntu users. – ObsessiveSSOℲ Oct 6 '12 at 16:57
