Hi and thanks for being here.

I used Soulcage's install instructions for my Neverwinter Nights: Diamond Edition, its the fifth post (4th reply) here:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1981870

They worked perfectly. Then I ran the game and my resolution changed down to 800x600, a condition which I had to change back manually after exiting. When I would try to change the resolution in the in-game settings it would cause the game to crash, booting me out to my desktop. Usually (in windows) there is a config program you run which sets the graphics settings for you - but when I checked the install folder for the game there wasn't one this time.

Also the sound did not work whatsoever. It was not muted by Ubuntu and my sound usually works just fine. I do use a Dell Soundblaster Live! series sound card due to my onboard sound being non-functional.

When I install the game on my other HDD which has WinXP, it crashes when you try to run it, so Ubuntu wins this time - it got further than WinXP did. Whatever causes the WinXP crash isn't relevant here, but I did recall just today (about a week after trying WinXP) that the game was linux-friendly. Off to do some research about just what the relationship is there......all wikipedia says is BioWare (the company that made the game) "released a free Linux client in June 2003, requiring a purchased copy of the game to play."......other stuff coming up as I search has nothing new, but there is mention of copying the "game resources" from an existing Windows install....here is an excerpt about where to get those resources, but from an older version "Needed in order to use Neverwinter Nights Linux Client, aside from the Linux Client binaries: Game Resources: You will need to get the Neverwinter Nights game resouces from one of these locations: from an existing Windows installation of the 1.29 build of Neverwinter Nights OR from an installation of the Neverwinter Nights Gold Edition OR from a mirror site hosting the Neverwinter Nights v1.29 Linux Client resources"

There probably isn't much special about how this game works on Linux or my searches would have been more fruitful. I'd love to try to solve this myself, but am pretty clueless about the resolution - I know from previous attempts at troubleshooting other graphics issues under Ubuntu that its out of my depth. The sound issue may be easier to resolve, or outright impossible. I'll keep working at it but educated input will definitely expedite the process.

I can post any hardware info you like, but I think this is probably entirely a software issue. I'm really more of a hardware enthusiast :(

EDIT: was just digging through the readme files in the install directory and found this:

The Neverwinter Nights client for Linux uses the Simple DirectMedia Layer library (SDL). SDL is currently available under the GNU Lesser General Public License (LGPL) versions 2 or newer.

For more information on SDL and the latest versions, please visit: http://www.libsdl.org/

SDL 1.2.5 source code and compiled libraries are available through: http://nwn.bioware.com/downloads/linuxclient.html

TL;DR: I don't see a question here. I only see a story. – Scott Severance Sep 27 '12 at 8:21
The game you are linking seems like a Windows based game, probably running through Wine. I suggest you file a bug report against Wine and ask them to help you with this. Closing this question as Not a real question. – jokerdino Sep 27 '12 at 9:45

It's difficult to tell what is being asked here. This question is ambiguous, vague, incomplete, overly broad, or rhetorical and cannot be reasonably answered in its current form. For help clarifying this question so that it can be reopened, see the FAQ.

It's not a game needing wine; you can either use wine and the windows version or the linux installer and a bunch of files from the windows version since NWN can run natively in Linux. I don't know if you already knew of this sites but here and here you can find more info, especially about running it in a 64bit system. I don't know how it will work now but in the past I managed to install in both 32 and 64 the Diamond Edition.
