The Nvidia proprietary drivers are too buggy and slow for me. I didn't need them at all except for hdmi forwarding. I'm using Ubuntu 12.04 x64. Could i forward video/audio through hdmi without proprietary drivers?

Video was fine, but audio didn't work for me without drivers. Had to install them (ones without "post-release updates") and everything worked just fine.

Do you talk about HDMI forwarding or just desktop experience? How did you manage to forward video through HDMI to another display device? – Miggs Sep 25 '12 at 11:46
Just install drivers and open graphics software (in your case Nvidia) with admin privileges. There you can adjust to extend your desktop to another device (monitor, tv..). – Alen T Sep 25 '12 at 12:04
I do have the free drivers installed. How do you extend your desktop to another device? Please be more specific. What software do you use and eventually, non-trivial steps. – Miggs Sep 25 '12 at 12:25
Just open system setting and go to Additional drivers, install the proprietary drivers for graphics card. After install and pc restart under system tools (or preferences, applications.. ) you will find graphic card software installed with the driver (Nvidia panel, or ATI Catalyst) open it. Under monitor/display setting you will se two connected monitors (any two displays connected). Enable them both and select within the options "Extended desktop" option. If you are using the tv select HDMI source to see if it works. Choose resolution and adjust some setting as will. Save settings and thats it – Alen T Sep 28 '12 at 7:05
