Ask Ubuntu is a question and answer site for Ubuntu users and developers. It's 100% free, no registration required.

back in the days of gnome 2, metacity used to display tooltips if the user hovered over the window buttons long enough, like 'close window', 'maximise window' etc. these were both pointless and annoying, at least in my opinion. i was overjoyed to see them removed in ubuntu's version of metacity (around 10.10).

now, in 12.04, they are apparently back:

tooltips

please, could someone tell me how to disable them? i did check in gconf-editor. i know it seems like a small thing, but it's really annoying.
