Ask Ubuntu is a question and answer site for Ubuntu users and developers. It's 100% free, no registration required.

I have a shared media folder that I have all of my mp3's in. When I try to play them using Ubuntu, I get no sound, but the media player (Rhythmbox, Exaile, etc) display that they are playing the file, it looks like everything is playing but no sound. I have checked and rechecked the volume levels of the system and each application and I see no issues.

If I move a file to the local drive, it plays just fine.

I do sound checks while the file is playing and I get audio (front left, front right) from the test but not from the media file that I am playing. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Could you add a little more detail about how you set up the shared folder –  damien Sep 18 '12 at 2:32
The shared folder is a samba share. Security is set to everyone "full rights" - My windows machines, xbox, dvd player, can all see the share and stream music off the share. My laptop, I get a burst of static and then silence. The media player continues, it shows the album art, the bar is moving across the screen but no sound. If I copy the file to my local drive and try to play it there, everything works great. –  Travis Sep 18 '12 at 12:32
It could be possibly this bug bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/rhythmbox/+bug/977866 as mentioned here askubuntu.com/a/132080/71679 In the bug comments it says "Totem can play the same file from the same samba share with no problems" which may offer a temporary fix if all system updates have been applied –  damien Sep 18 '12 at 13:05
Everything does seem to indicate that exact problem. Well I guess it is a good thing that amazon cloud player still works. Thank you for your response. –  Travis Sep 18 '12 at 13:25
