Possible Duplicate:
There's an issue with an Alpha Release of Ubuntu, what should I do?

Hi,

I upgraded to 11.04 and everything seemed to go smoothly. Now the computer starts, it goes to the login screen , I enter my credentials, you can hear the login sound and then it does nothing.

The header and footer bar do not appear.

Any ideas on what I could try ?

Thanks.

It sounds like an issue between Unity and your graphics drivers.

Before you log in, choose "Ubuntu Classic Desktop". This will load Gnome with gnome-panel, rather than the new Unity interface.

For more information it's a good bet to visit the Natty areas of ubuntuforums: http://ubuntuforums.org/forumdisplay.php?f=394

Indeed choosing Classic Desktop seems to start ok. But there are still problems : like when doing an alt tab would freeze all the windows. And who knows what else. I eventually did a clean install of 10.10 Thanks. – sirrocco Dec 26 '10 at 15:44
The ALT-TAB freeze is due to having mipmaps enabled in Compiz's Static Window Switcher. I'm guessing you have an AMD graphics card! – Jonathon Dec 26 '10 at 15:57
