Ask Ubuntu is a question and answer site for Ubuntu users and developers. It's 100% free, no registration required.

Using 12.04 on Dell Precision M6400, when I close the lid, instead of suspending as expected, it crashes and lid open will not restore session. Reboot is required.

However, if I click shutdown/suspend, the system suspends correctly, I can then close the lid for storage and the system restores correctly on lid open.

What is the difference between the two suspend methods please and how can I overcome this irritating effect ? This worked fine until a couple of weeks ago, so I suspect a package upgrade may have broken this, but I have no way of knowing which.

Grateful for any pointers.

GB.
