I've been using a live USB (ubuntu 12.04) for a long time and as my primary OS. i have a lot of saved data on the USB. now i encountered this problem kernel panic - not syncing : attempted to kill init!
and i don't think it is repairable and the best option would be to just copy the important data and re-install the ubuntu on USB. but the crux is that when i plug the USB in a machine (running Windows i don't think that matters) i am not able to find my saved files that i want to save. how do i get the saved files?

You could make another live USB, boot from that, plug in the broken USB then transfer the data wherever you want. – hnasarat Sep 13 '12 at 7:46
wouldn't it be the same as plugging the USB in any other OS which i've already tried? – parth_gohil Sep 13 '12 at 7:48
I wouldn't think so. Ubuntu uses filesystem formats which windows and mac os can't read by default...(they prefer their own proprietary ones). So, I would image a Ubuntu install would be able to read all the contents on the live USB that doens't work. – hnasarat Sep 13 '12 at 15:46
