In both Skype and the Sound Recorder application, I am not capturing any audio from my built-in microphone. I'm not sure why. Otherwise, sound output is working well.

I have tried running gstreamer-properties and setting the Default Input plugin to PulseAUdio as well (to match the output), and it didn't help.

I have tried running alsamixer -V all and I only get 2 input-related entries: Capture(L R) which is on 100 and not muted (can't be either), and Analog Mic Boost which is on 20db.

Extra info: Camera (video) is working well on Skype and Kamerka.

Can you please help me get my microphone to work?

I've had similar problems with a netbook, where there was a bug so that the left and right channels of the mic cancelled each other (buggy noise cancellation code, I think). You could try unlocking the channels, and setting one to zero and the other one up to see if the recording works then. –  Steve Kroon Sep 9 '12 at 12:23

I have a Lenovo IdeaPad R580-3087 with the same sound card (Intel Corporation Panther Point High Definition Audio Controller, rev 04). I have tried using gstreamer-properties with no effect. However searching for solutions I read how the microphone stopped working after the kernel was updated to a newer version, so installed version 3.5 using this kernel upgrade guide.

Now I am able to record sound using gnome-sound-recorder, Skype call test however gnome-control-center sound it still looks disabled as if there was no microphone. That might be because in gstreamer-properties I have changed the settings from custom to PulseAudio, and in pavucontrol under the Input tab the mic seems to be displayed as work for about 3 seconds, but I can still record sound or use Skype.

So I don't know why it looks like it doesn't work, but it does. So I can at lease use Skype and other recoding media. If anybody has more info I'd be very grateful.

Adding following line to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf helped me and may help you as well:

options snd-hda-intel model=auto
