Thunderbird crashed when I started the program in my Ubuntu 12.04 64 bits. I have over 40 GB in e-mails that I can not access.

I'm very disappointed. Please help me.

more information is needed to answer your question... 1. Is this a new install or was Thunderbird working before and then suddenly stopped? 2. If it crashed after working before, was this after updating? 3. are you using the default Thunderbird that comes with Ubuntu or have you changed to a different version, if so did you use a PPA or did you download it direct form Mozilla.org Please edit your question to include this information. – TrailRider Sep 8 '12 at 1:29
you can try and see if there is a general thunderbird problem by typing in terminal thunderbird -ProfileManager. In this way, you can create a new profile with empty mail folders and try to see if it is an add-on problem or other. An other possibility is to type in the terminal thunderbird -safe-mode; it will probably start in safe mode with default profile. – bob Sep 8 '12 at 4:53

First of all, back up your profile!

All emails and accounts are located in /home/<user>/.thunderbird.

The cryptic folder is your profile, the profiles.ini manages the active profile. Try to copy the profile on a test machine's thunderbird (by placing it in the folder above and set the profiles.ini to the folder), so we know if it is a problem with your Thunderbird program or with the profile.

The Profile is completely compatible through I think all versions.

  • in the .thunderbird-folder is a folder crash reports. there should be further information on the issue!
