Welcome to Ask Ubuntu! Your question as it reads now is a little unclear. Could you please provide the complete directions you are attempting to follow, or at least let us know what you are trying to accomplish by following those steps? – WarriorIng64 Sep 7 '12 at 21:17

You should also add which version of Ubuntu you are using. It sounds like you might be reading instructions for an early version of Ubuntu like 10.04 LTS which has (Applications and) Places and System menus in a bar running across the top of the screen, but you are actually using a more recent version like 12.04 LTS which uses the Unity interface with a set of icons down the left side of the screen and no obvious menus. Or, include a screenshot of your desktop perhaps? – CentaurusA Sep 7 '12 at 21:50
Why marked to be closed as "not a real question" for a newbie? @Leo in NJ seems to be a real newbie and closing the question won't result in help. I know that the rules and the FAQ and blablabla... but how does this help? – Geppettvs D'Constanzo Sep 8 '12 at 0:04

It's difficult to tell what is being asked here. This question is ambiguous, vague, incomplete, overly broad, or rhetorical and cannot be reasonably answered in its current form. For help clarifying this question so that it can be reopened, see the FAQ.

These instructions you refer to seems to be for 11.04 and earlier versions. In 12.04 the instructions will be quite different. In 11.04 and previous versions we used to have the menu with these options as shown in the next screenshot:

enter image description here

Starting from 11.10 when using Unity, the options are in a different place. May be you can install gnome in order to have such functionality.

The answers to this question explains how to install the latest Gnome Shell:

How do I install and use the latest version of GNOME Shell?

Nevertheless, I can't say for sure that installing the latest Gnome Shell will result in having such options in the menu so I strongly suggest you to follow the instructions for your current OS version.

Good luck!
