I have installed ubuntu on my toshiba laptop and whenever I connect a microphone it doesn't detect any sounds at all. Everything worked well under xp. When I try sound recorder to record sounds it registers no sounds. The only thing that actually gets recorded is a sound when I remove or connect the microphone in its socket(a kind of a "click"). No its NOT muted I checked a million times. Thanks a lot!

Can you check System Settings/Sound/Input and see if the device appears there? If yes, try adjusting the Input volume slider to the right. If no, is this a USB microphone? If yes, type lsusb in the Terminal and add the output into your question please. – Tom Brossman Sep 3 '12 at 6:05
Actually its not a usb microphone, but when I look there in the settings there is no mention of any device realtek. Though when I check alsamixer it says realtek. – Adrian Gabura Sep 3 '12 at 7:45
