As a newbie I am experiencing great pain with Xubuntu 12.04 (Guest) running on WinXP Service Pk3 (Host) Acer Aspire One(Netbook: 1.6 Ghz CPU/1.5 Gig Ram) w/VirtualBox. Started three weeks ago trying to download/install and tweak the following:

VirtualBox 4.1.18...win.exe (live desktop version & downloaded as .torrent--3 day process) Xubuntu 12.04 --used .torrent download using Vuze...another 3 day process (Note: Have extremely slow Internet: Using Cricket Broadband)

Installed Virtual Machine using 512MB Ram; 10gig hard drive with Video 12MB.

Didn't discover Software Center & Synaptics until after I downloaded (using download manager) and unwrapped the following software by double-clicking: a) Moonlight--I am trying to open "Silverlight" videos required for on-line QTP class. b) Silverlight --very painful process as EULA would disappear and fail while entering authentication....still have not gotten this to work thru Firefox. c) Gnome Player d) Gecko

Then after more on-line searching found an article about "25 things I did after installing Xubuntu" and another good article and installed the following--found the Software Center & Synaptic by now--this took about 12 hours:

Restricted-extras Open JDK & IceTea plug-in VLC SMPlayer Audacious2 Libdvdccs --by Medibuntu--installed thru Terminal Non-free-codecs, w32codecs --by Medibuntu--installed thru Terminal

Problem: VM has always been slow starting up and shutting down, even before my fumbling and trying to download different software...crashing numerous times and/or getting stuck and I would reset it or shut it down...now it's even worse. Several other things I am having problems with and need assistance:

a) How to get Silverlight or possibly even VLC to work on Silverlight Videos? b) How to get Plugins into Firefox browser?--tried copy/paste an .so file, but that didn't work. c) How to remove programs that I installed without using Software Center/Synaptics?--perhaps those programs I installed like Moonlight are causing problems even though Firefox has disabled it. d) How to get sound to work to listen to the videos?--have USB connected when VM boots up. e) Is there a defrag or disk cleanup available on Xubuntu?--this may help.

Thanks for your help...Connectplus

What you should do is run it the other way around, install -buntu then virtual-box and run windowsXP in virtual box on top of the Linux install.

From what I have seen Windows runs faster in Virtual box than it does on the bare metal

I find that extremely hard to believe. Running any OS natively will, by definition, always be faster than running the OS in a virtualization layer. – SirCharlo Aug 30 '12 at 14:14
