I just moved to 12.04 64-bit, and it does not allow me to get higher resolution then 1024x768 @50Hz, it's horrible. My target is 1280x1024 @75Hz.

Specs:

Monitor: Samsung Syncmaster 769MB VGA: NVidia 9800GT

PS: I'm new to this system, please keep it simple.

Have you installed any graphic card drivers? Open the aplication jockey and see if additional drivers are enabled – LnxSlck Aug 28 '12 at 0:18

Turns out I'm gonna kill myself! You know why? I downloaded the LTS, is this the laptop version? Hahahahahahahaa – Amanda Aug 28 '12 at 1:39
LTS stands for "long term support", not "laptop version" :) This is the right version to install. – Sergey Aug 28 '12 at 1:43
