Vertical scrolling in programs like Zim Desktop Wiki or LibreOffice gets choppy, when some additional programs like Firefox are opened.

I assume, that it might has to do something with RAM. The choppy scrolling occurs only, when approximatelly 770 MB or more of my 2 GB RAM are used. Everything below and the scrolling is smooth again.

My specs:

Sony Vaio VGN-FZ21E
Intel Core 2 Duo T7250 2 GHz
2048 MB, DDR2, PC5300, 667 MHz
NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GT
160GB 5400U/Min Hitachi HTS541616J9SA00

Using Ubuntu 12.04 64-bit with Gnome-Shell.

Any idea how to have smooth scrolling all the time?
