Are both detected as audio devices? Is it possible that the sound is trying to go out the HDMI port on my graphics card by default?

Ubuntu finds your audio devices, however, there needs to be an appropriate driver to make the hardware work in the first place. What audio devices are listed under System settings -> Audio? –  Cumulus007 Aug 25 '12 at 21:36

Yes I would think it is trying to make the output throw your HDMI Cable as default. Try to change the soundcard settings.
