I'm getting this error

kernel panic not syncing vfs unable to mount root fs on unknown block (2,0)

while installing 12.04 LTS desktop version for the first time on my laptop which is running on Windows XP. I'm trying to boot the same from USB wherein I have already extracted the 12.04 LTS .iso image file with the help of Universal-USB-Installer-1.9.0.7.

I'm completely new to the Linux environment thus have no idea as what exactly is going haywire.

I did a bit of net surfing and found out that I'm missing initramfs for kernel.

Can anybody suggest how to choose anther kernel from grub menu or update initramfs -u-k version?

I can see installer boot menu alright and after selecting Try Ubuntu or Install Ubuntu option getting this error after initial boot sequence.

Please help. Also detail info about what needs to be done, code if any or how to get to terminal (shortcut keys) would be helpful.

Which laptop is it. – cgubuntu121p Aug 19 '12 at 18:56
This is happening for me as well, when booting off the USB stick. It isn't a laptop, it's a PC I built myself - but it's worked fine with Ubuntu 8.10 through 10.04. – sudowned Sep 15 '12 at 18:44
