I have a Sony Handycam. Under Windows I was able to capture the video to disc over USB. Is there a way to do this in Ubuntu?

When I plug the camcorder into the USB port, nothing comes up and nothing is reported in the syslog.

I installed Kino, but this appears to be firewire only.

Is there a way to do this or eill I be required to buy extra hardware?

You want to use Handicam as Webcam for Video Streaming live? – BigSack Aug 19 '12 at 10:34
Have you tried capturing the stream with VLC? It can open capture devices. This might not be the thing you want but you could see if it is generally working – stonedsquirrel Aug 19 '12 at 10:57
@BigGenius no, I have shot some footage and want to get it off the tape and onto my hard drive, so I can edit it. – artfulrobot Aug 19 '12 at 13:50
