Ask Ubuntu is a question and answer site for Ubuntu users and developers. It's 100% free, no registration required.

For our development work we have a 10.10 x86_64 server running on a HP Proliant 150.

The users need to mount some resources from a windows pc in their home directories. Therefore we have multiple (approx 12) cifs mounts to various pcs to their homes.

However, sometimes people walk away with their laptop without unmounting, and then the cifs mounts become inaccessible.

From there on we get all kinds of strange problems, like unable to unmount the mount, hanging processes (for example cat /proc/mounts hangs) and strange kernel messages (see end of post)

Questions: Is it possible to auto unmount disconnected windows pc's? How to unmount those cifs mounts ? Is there a better way to mount the cifs shares automatically ?
