I have 12.04 installed and I am using Gnome as my GUI. When I have my Ethernet connected on start up, Ubuntu has no problem bringing up the nm-applet on my system tray. I can view/disconnect/connect all wireless information as if the card was working properly.

Now, when I start up my Dell Inspiron with no Ethernet cable connected; I am unable to connect to any network what so ever. nm-applet is no where to be found and when I try to manually add a connection with the Network Connections, I am unable to edit/add any entries.

lshw -C network gives me my installed NIC information for my Wireless and Wired which look to be fine.

I edited my Startup Applications to add nm-applet (the command is just nm-applet, correct?)

Okay so, I started the laptop with the Ethernet cable plugged in. Everything checks out on start-up. I disabled the WiFi in the System Tray, and I am able to surf the web, but if I try to view the Connection information, then I get a pop-up saying that I am not connected. Ifconfig eth0 shows that I have obtained an address from the router (of course). – simple Aug 14 '12 at 0:25
