I have installed Ubuntu 11.04 on Vmware 8. Everything works fine and I have installed some programs.

The problem I have faced now is when I am extracting a ~500MB bz2 using bunzip2 in console, after 20 or 30 seconds the Ubuntu freezes and the HDD light stops blinking. I still can move the mouse cursor but clicking doesn't work. Pressing Ctrl+Alt+F1, Alt+Tab, Ctrl+Z or even sending Ctrl+Alt+Delete doesn't make anything happen.

  • I've assigned 20GB for virtual hard drive = 2GB for swap, ~12GB free space and the rest for programs and OS.
  • The original file in bz2 file is around 5GB.
  • The allocated physical RAM for Ubuntu virtual machine is 892MB.
  • The vmware files are located in a NTFS parition in the host OS (Win7) with ~60GB free space.

reopened - This question is not duplicate of askubuntu.com/questions/4408/… . This question is about the freezing that happens during file copy. Unlike the cited question, this question is not looking for a way to get out of freezing, but is seeking for a way to avoid the freezing during file copy – fossfreedom Aug 18 '12 at 20:49
