Ask Ubuntu is a question and answer site for Ubuntu users and developers. It's 100% free, no registration required.

I left my computer open in the night and in the morning I saw a small icon with the user name and saying log in. I pressed that login button and transferred to a black screen saying:

username@the hard drive name:^^s
evi:@Ektoras:^^s

I typed login and it said:

Cannot possibly work without an effective root

What does it mean? I am kinda new to Linux.

I tried /home/user/.profile but it said:

No such file or directory

Any help would be appreciated.

What happenes when you restart the computer? Also, .profile is not a valid default directory in your home folder, and you need to apply cd in front of a directory name. – Cumulus007 Aug 11 '12 at 21:26
