I've tried downloading boot-repair, but it didn't find an O.S. However it did give me this boot summary http://paste.ubuntu.com/1140156/ if someone can make sense of it and tell me what I can do next, many thanks to you.

I just tried to instal grub manually but its telling me '/dev/sda1 is already mounted on /cdrom' – user82641 Aug 10 '12 at 23:43
