I have a HP laptop from 2011 and I installed 12.04 x64. Everything works but the audio. It works but it sounds awful compared to windows 7. My chip is IDT HD Audio. It is set to un-amplified.

How can I fix this?

That comparison is not helpful. Is the sound distorted all the time or does the behavior change on certain actions. What are you using built in speakers, headphones, IEMs? Also have a look at alsamixer in your terminal to find something suspicious like an activated line-in catching distortion from the environment. – LiveWireBT Aug 10 '12 at 23:28
