Take a look at this:

> sudo apt-get install multiarch-support

multiarch-support is already the newest version.
You might want to run 'apt-get -f install' to correct these:
The following packages have unmet dependencies.
libglib2.0-0 : Breaks: libglib2.0-0:i386 (!= 2.32.3-0ubuntu1) but 2.32.1-0ubuntu2 is to be installed
libglib2.0-0:i386 : Breaks: libglib2.0-0 (!= 2.32.1-0ubuntu2) but 2.32.3-0ubuntu1 is to be installed
E: Unmet dependencies. Try 'apt-get -f install' with no packages (or specify a solution).

The following packages were automatically installed and are no longer required:
  libpcrecpp0:i386 zlib1g-dev:i386 libc6-dev:i386 linux-libc-dev:i386
Use 'apt-get autoremove' to remove them.
The following extra packages will be installed:
  libglib2.0-0:i386
The following packages will be upgraded:
  libglib2.0-0:i386

Do you want to continue [Y/n]?
dpkg: error processing libglib2.0-0:i386 (--configure):
libglib2.0-0:i386 2.32.1-0ubuntu2 cannot be configured because libglib2.0-0:amd64 is in a different version (2.32.3-0ubuntu1)
dpkg: error processing libglib2.0-0 (--configure):
libglib2.0-0:amd64 2.32.3-0ubuntu1 cannot be configured because libglib2.0-0:i386 is in a different version (2.32.1-0ubuntu2)
Errors were encountered while processing:
libglib2.0-0:i386
libglib2.0-0
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

This final result is the problem. I've tried various combinations of:

  • installing dev packages,
  • appending :i386,
  • installing ia32-libs,
  • dpkg --force-thisorthat libglib2.0-0_2.32.1-0ubuntu2_i386.deb,

and it always comes back to this problem. But the strange thing is that I currently do not have a 32 bit version of libglib* anywhere on my system! I got a few under /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu, but none in the 32 bit directory.

I saw some people responding to similar cases by asking to see this:

Please help - this problem is stopping me from installing any packages at all. Ubuntu Software Centre can't fix it either. – Adrian May Aug 9 '12 at 6:34
