This isn't a rant about the instability of Unity, so hear me out. :)

From the fresh install of 12.04 that i did, Unity ran great. There were no crashes, no corruption problems, everything was great. But after a few months of 12.04, Unity tends to keep crashing when opening the dash, it gets corrupt graphics very often, and login time takes about 30 seconds longer than it did at first. My install literally has not changed from the beginning--I have not changed any compiz settings, have not added anything new to the startup applications, etc.

Does anyone know how to improve Unity's stability?

Try unity --reset? Something in your settings must've gone wrong. –  Uri Herrera Aug 4 '12 at 6:54
Typically unity --reset is what I run via TTY whenever something goes funny. However, it always causes it to later crash and not reappear, causing me to run the command repeatedly. I'm going to try reinstalling my OS...maybe that would help. –  Ryan McClure Aug 4 '12 at 7:03
It's hard to tell. Have a look at the system log, sometimes it'll have useful pointers, errors etc. –  mikewhatever Aug 4 '12 at 8:02
Thanks to Apport, I've been able to track the problem--every time Unity crashes, it claims that compiz is crashing. Since Unity is just a compiz plugin, I can see why. I'm also guess that the corruption in the graphics may be compiz-related too. –  Ryan McClure Aug 5 '12 at 17:06
