Ask Ubuntu is a question and answer site for Ubuntu users and developers. It's 100% free, no registration required.

I've installed Ubuntu 12.04. I added the Ubuntu-X-Swat X-Updates repository and ran

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade

I blindly pressed ok (stupid I know!) and then restarted. Now I can't login it to my account, evne though my password is correct. It seems to go to a black screen tryign to log me in, then return me to the login screen. Even when I change to Ubuntu 2D, Gnome, Gnome Classic, Gnome Class (No effects), the same thing happens.

What is very strange however, is that I can still login using the guest account! How can I fix this? I thought I should try uninstallting all packages that came from that repository (finding them using the method described here), remove the repository, and re-install nvidia-common but I can't because I can only access the guest account, and I cant su into anything.

Any help would be great!

Welcome to Ask Ubuntu! This question should instead be filed as a bug report, and as such is off-topic, thanks! Instructions on filing a bug report are here. – Jorge Castro Jul 31 '12 at 23:50
@JorgeCastro Will Apport be able to collect the necessary information to make the bug report useful, when run from the guest account? – Eliah Kagan Aug 1 '12 at 6:35
I don't think it will. In cases like this where you're running real bleeding stuff it helps to contact the X team directly: wiki.ubuntu.com/X/SwatTeam – Jorge Castro Aug 1 '12 at 11:56
