I am trying to install the webframework Play!

The problem that I encounter is that i already have another app called 'play'

so if I use:

$ play

It' another application. How can I unistall this one?

And to install the correct Play! framework. Would this be correct?

export PATH=$PATH:/home/downloads/play-2.0.2/

In general terms, you can find out what package a file comes from by the following command:

dpkg -S <the_file>

e.g. on my system, running:

dpkg -S /usr/bin/7za


p7zip-full: /usr/bin/7za

The first part is the package that provides the file. In your case, this would be the package "sox". From the package description, "SoX is a command line utility that can convert various formats of computer audio files to other formats. It can also apply various effects to these sound files during the conversion." Used by mythbuntu by the looks of it, so maybe you have that?

To be honest, if this play installation is just extracting it to one directory, you can probably just get away with invoking play by either a full path to it or creating a symbolic link of another, more unique name. Something like:

ln -s <play-framework>/play /usr/bin/play_framework

hey thanks I was able to unistall sox. But i still can't install the play framework. I guess this cmd is not correct -> export PATH=$PATH:/home/downloads/play-2.0.2/ ? – Maik Klein Jul 30 '12 at 23:40

That command is fine but it won't stick unless you put it in .bashrc or something so it runs every time you open a terminal. It also seems odd that you'd have it in a directory called /home/downloads/play-2.0.2/ since usually your home directory would be /home/<your_username>/ - I'd expect it to be under there. Anyway, glad you got it working OK. I still run mine as ~/play-2.0.2/play so I don't have it on my path - their name is just too generic for my liking. – themightyjon Aug 1 '12 at 9:48
remove the play system package link from the /user/bin if already exist,then follow the above procedure. – pradeek Aug 24 '14 at 6:47
