Ask Ubuntu is a question and answer site for Ubuntu users and developers. It's 100% free, no registration required.

Within the last hour I've started losing letters. This happened after all my programs crashed except for pidgin. (needed to Ctrl+Alt+Backspace)

If I go to google.com queries containing numbers, some of the punctuation and a few capital letters don't appear. The same characters are missing from the search results.

If I open Writer and change the font to "Arial" then the same letters don't appear. Though they do appear in Terminal, askubuntu.com, etc. So I assume it is a font specific problem?

Why is this happening? How can I diagnose and fix it?

Reasons for crash? What were you doing when system crashed? What does "crash" means in this case? Does it only affect Arial font? Which pages have you tested? What fonts have you been using? Have you deleted some font files? Has one of your programs that crashed anything to do with fonts? As you can see - much more info can be given for others to help you... – LIttle Ancient Forest Kami Jan 12 at 16:08
