Ask Ubuntu is a question and answer site for Ubuntu users and developers. It's 100% free, no registration required.

I'm really new to Linux, and I have an old FX5200 which I'm not sure if its working.

This is what I did: I stopped lightdm, then installed and blacklisting first everything related to Nouveau (including nvidia-current and all their variants.)

But then, when I restarted I noticed that even though I was running at my monitor's native resolution (1600x900 - LG E2041), Ubuntu didn't recognized my graphics card and I had 16.3 mbs less of RAM (I have 495.7 out of 512), probably because the integrated VIA video card was using them. But an application called NVIDIA X Server Settings was telling me that there was an FX5200 working.

It confuses me, can you help me?

I wouldn't worry too much about it, but, in case you can't sleep at night, look through the output of less /var/log/Xorg.0.log. :~) – mikewhatever Jul 25 '12 at 7:18
