As I was updating my mothers laptop the circuits in the house tripped, the laptop turned off now i cant boot it can configure the network then cant boot with out configuring the network. I have tried to reinstall ubuntu but it says I cant because it is not compatible with my kernal.

I just need ubuntu to run i dont need to save any files!

try Ctrl+Alt+F1 to F6 to switch in console mode, then try sudo update-grub and reboot => askubuntu.com/a/75984/32413 – Boris Jul 24 '12 at 18:26
