I think there used to be a button there in the left of the search field, like an 'x' with a circle around it. It seems to have gone walkabout. Any ideas on what might cause that?

Screen shot

It will be there if there is something present to erase. If there's nothing entered or there from "last time", you won't see it. – vasa1 Jul 24 '12 at 10:50
Right.. but have a look at teh screen shot. I think the behavior is that it shows a magnifying glass when nothing is typed, and then the (x) erase icon when something is typed. In the screen shot that I provided above, I started typing 'screen' yet no icon button appears. I already tried reinstallign Unity, and using MyUnity to select 'Default Settings' but this makes no difference. – Han Cnx Jul 25 '12 at 4:45
Sorry about that! I was viewing with images off! Have you tried unity --reset? – vasa1 Jul 25 '12 at 6:48
Hmm. get a whole bunch of warnings, all settings are back to the default (launcher icons the size of beer coasters ;) ), it then hangs at unity.glib.dbusproxy GLibDBusProxy.cpp:283 Calling method "GlobalSearch" on object path: "/net/launchpad/lens/photo" failed: Timeout was reached -- but the icon is still missing. I wonder if the icon file somehow disappeared, because when I click in the empty space, it does actually still work to erase typed text. – Han Cnx Jul 25 '12 at 9:17
Note: In Unity 2D the icons show as normal. – Han Cnx Jul 26 '12 at 5:26
