I did something wrong with laptop and now I get this error message "BOOTMGR image is corrupt. The system cannot boot." when I try to boot using windows 7 DVD.

System Specifications:

  • DELL XPS L502X Laptop (bought in April 2012)
  • Partition: Windows7 64bit + Ubuntu 12.04 32bit
  • RAM: 8GB

This is what I did with the well running healthy system:

  1. I deleted ubuntu partition from windows7: I went to windows7-->right click click computer -->Manage-->Storage-->Disk management--> deleted all the primary partitions of Ubuntu.
  2. After reboot, I got error saying "Grub Rescue>" in a prompt command mode
  3. I took live CD of Ubuntu but it didn't boot the cd, it said that no bootable partition exists.
  4. I took Windows 7 DVD (iso image burned) and tried to boot with this: it was showing "Windows is loading files..." on the screen from last 5 hours, so I just reboot machine by pressing power button.
  5. this time I got this error message when I tried to boot again with the windows7 DVD

Please help, what should I do? Will my laptop ever work again? or I killed him? :(

thank you GUNN

Trouble with a Windows disc is off topic for askubuntu. – psusi Jul 21 '12 at 22:19

In the spirit of being helpful to others that might find their way here, this is a relevant post with the proper way to remove Ubuntu: askubuntu.com/questions/133533/… – Call me V Jul 21 '12 at 22:49
I recommend this be migrated to SuperUser. Basic information about removing Ubuntu and getting Windows booting is, I think, on-topic for our site (like the above linked question). But detailed help with Windows boot problems is not something we're particularly well suited to provide. The community at SuperUser is a more appropriate place for such questions. – Eliah Kagan Jul 22 '12 at 3:14

You need to use a New "Windows 7" disc as it has an error. I have had this problem before and it was the only solution I could find. Another note make sure you are using the right bit for your system ergo (32bit or 64bit) 64bit won't function properly on a PC designed to use 32bit. However a 64bit OS can run either or.

You need to replace Ubuntu's boot loader GRUB with the Windows boot loader and everything will be fine. Just follow the instructions on the Microsoft site: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927392

I would recommend making a bootable USB stick from the Windows 7 ISO if you have it. Also, please use the Windows 7 SP1 image, SP1 contains support for advanced format hard drives, which are very common in new computers and may cause issues with older installation media.
