i just installed wouldnt it be fully updated? –  sam Jul 21 '12 at 11:35
@sam not necessarily - no. There's a checkbox for download updates during installation. –  hbdgaf Jul 21 '12 at 11:37
can u pls point the way to update ? thx :D –  sam Jul 21 '12 at 11:38
@EliahKagan - this is off-topic - its a bug and is applicable only for a specific moment in time - thus this question and the answer will not be the reusable article we strive for in AU. –  fossfreedom Jul 23 '12 at 16:07
@fossfreedom While the solution is applicable to any situation where the Software Center must be updated to install a bug fix, I suppose I see the argument that this question is not generalized in this way and thus was correct to close. –  Eliah Kagan Jul 23 '12 at 16:10

This is a bug, but it's one that's been fixed, so all you have to do is install an update. (Thanks to jokerdino for posting the bug link and updating advice that led to this answer.) As aking1012 pointed out, you don't always have all updates installed, after freshly installing Ubuntu.

Since the Software Center is affected but not the Update Manager, you should be able to just update in the Update Manager.

But if you don't want to do that, or for any reason that doesn't work, you can update from the Terminal (Ctrl+Alt+T) by running these commands:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade

If you have problems following these instructions or your problem isn't solved after you've followed them, please post a comment here and also edit your question to add the details of what happened. You probably won't have any more trouble, though--updating with either of the above methods should fix the Software Center on your machine.
