I downloaded the Nvidia driver and stopped X windows like it said but after the installation was complete I could not exit the console screen. I tried Ctrl+Alt+F7 but it just takes me to another console screen with a bunch of lines saying starting and stopping and [OK] on the right side of the screen.

I've run into similar problems in the past as well. I vaguely remember that there is a need to update X configuration by running nvidia-xconfig. – Andrejs Cainikovs Jul 18 '12 at 16:15
When you are in that console, check the log for errors with this command: less /var/log/Xorg.0.log – Tom Jul 18 '12 at 17:10
i purged the nvidia files and started over. Thanks for the input guys. FYI im trying to get CUDA to work... – user77794 Jul 18 '12 at 17:36
