I have an i7 720qm intel processor along with an NVIDIA 330 GT graphics card and 4 GB ram running Ubuntu 12.04. My processor has more than enough power to handle multiple programs at once, but for some reason even opening Google Chrome or the Software center takes up to 3 or 4 seconds to open. Also, if I have more than one window open at a time there is a severe lag when using each program.

I read a couple of other threads out there, and I checked for the compiz bug that everyone is talking about. Compiz is running < 15% at all times. Why is everything so slow?

NOTE: I did install the drivers for the graphics card from NVIDIA, so that isn't the problem either (also stated to be a problem in previous posts)

Am I missing a driver for my processor to activate the turbo boost, take it out of power saving mode, or unlock all four cores? Thanks in advance.

Check your cooling system. See if its cooling OK. – Mitch Jul 17 '12 at 16:39
cooling is definitely a problem. my computer has shut off from overheating multiple times recently. could this alone be causing the problem? – nathpilland Jul 17 '12 at 18:07
