My computer recently shutdown while I was out of batteries, and after I recharged it, the wireless and wired connections don't work anymore.

The wireless network is detected, connected to, and then shuts off after a few seconds. The wired network does the same thing. I didn't install updates or anything, now I just can't connect.

I've tried doing sudo restart network-manager which brings back the connections for a few seconds until they die again. I did sudo ifconfig eth0 up to make sure eth0 was up. What should I do?

What is the output of: rfkill list ? If there is a blocked network interface, either soft or hard blocked, run sudo rfkill unblock all – cumulus007 Jul 15 '12 at 6:58
