Virtualbox doesn't like it and it seizes up even caused me to force shutdown a couple times tired of restarting and would like a side by side using Ubuntu 12.04

"would like a side by side using Ubuntu 12.04" This question is asking about how to dual-boot Windows and Ubuntu because VirtualBox was not working well. It's not a question about VirtualBox on Windows, or about Windows (though the wording is a bit confusing, I do admit). Since a USB flash drive is just a hard disk, you should be able create bootable usb drive with both windows and ubuntu.

In principle, it should be the same as making a normal dual boot setup Dual boot guide

  1. Install windows on usb disk
  2. Shrink windows partition and create a partition for ubuntu
  3. Install ubuntu and replace the boot loader, giving you dual boot capability.[2][3]

NOTE: I haven't tried this myself.
