I connect to the internet via a dial-up modem using Gnome PPP. This works great for browsing the web. However, some applications think that I am not connected to a network. Specifically, Evolution and Empathy. Even the update manager has a message in its window saying that I cannot download updates because I'm not connected to a network. However, if I ignore that message and just press install updates, it goes ahead and downloads them. But it is not so simple with Evolution and Empathy.

I cannot find any option in the network manager for a dial-up connection.

Is there any way that I can tell the system that I am connected to a network when I am connecting through dial-up?

You may be able to have another computer connect to the internet via dial-up and then share its connection to the computer in question. This may trick Ubuntu into seeing your internet connection as a network connection. I have done this with Windows via IIS, but I don't have details on how to do it with Ubuntu. – user76496 Jul 12 '12 at 6:18
