I've been happily running Kbuntu for a few years now, but at the moment I want to go back to dual boot, with a gaming platform.

I have a bootable Windows XP installation disk, but my system no longer boots from it. I have also tried other bootable Window installation disks with no changes.

The boot order in my bios has ATAPI CD-ROM as the first entry in the boot priority, however when I try to boot from my disk, the system displays a blank screen, then grub loads as usual. The system behaves as if the Windows CD is no longer bootable.

Any suggestions for forcing a boot from the CD? Thanks.

I am pretty sure grub loads only on HDD boot. The windows cds might need a windows boot loader to run. You might research ways to temporarily add one, then reinstall grub after xp install. I would wait for some solid answers first though. – NightwishFan Dec 5 '10 at 9:00
Then i guess your XP disc is not bootable.Buy a bootable XP disc and then try again.See the following link to make your XP bootable if it is not,onecomputerguy.com/install/winxp_bootable.htm – karthick87 Dec 5 '10 at 9:04
It seems very likely your question is not related to Ubuntu - consider asking it at superuser.com. – Stefano Palazzo Dec 5 '10 at 9:34

May be your boot disk will have some problem.Or the cd may be not bootable.Check that you have set your first boot device to CD/DVD rom in BIOS.Insert your XP CD/DVD and boot,if it's not booting then probably your disk is not bootable.

Note:
If you have virtual box installed in your system try booting your media and then check it.

If nothing else than add the CD rom to the GRUB menu.

@Mitch This is not critiquing or requesting clarification from the author. It is providing a way to solve the problem. This answer should ideally be expanded so it's useful to more people, but that cannot happen if it is a comment. For that and other reasons, answers like this should not be comments, though sometimes very unhelpful answers can be deleted. – Eliah Kagan Aug 25 '12 at 22:24

First, it has nothing to do with your Ubuntu OS.

Can you even read your CD from Ubuntu (or any other OS)? Optical media like CD's can get damaged over time and become unreadable.

Most BIOSes allows to show the boot menu (in which you can select the boot media) by pressing a key like F2, F8 or F9. Select the CD device for booting and boot from it.
