I've struggled for some time to get that webcam somehow working (thus read 'some' doc), but there is some problems left for which the web leaves me clueless:

How do I get a non mirrored image from the webcam since preloading l4v1compat won't solve this ?

This seems to be quite an old model, it doesn't even have a microphone although every sold low-end cams now provide audio as well.

Device ID: 041e:4036
Loaded modules : videodev, gspca_main, gspca_zc3xx

I'll summarize what I've attempted and achieved if this can help both helpers and others in trouble.

My goal: get the webcam working flawlessly for Skype at least
(serious matter: introducing a reltive into the Linux world... mustn't fail)

Tested software:

(implies testing with and without l4v1compat and/or l4v2convert preloaded)

  • ¤ Ubiquity : During installation, it allows to take a shot from the webcam to match the default user : perfect framerate on its preview ! I wish I could find what's the utility for this, embedded in Ubiquity ! and which settings. I welcome hints on this!

  • ¤ Cheese : no image, greyed buttons, never worked.

  • ¤ Camorama : nice video stream for ~5s, then freezes, displays an error ("unable to capture image"), exits by itself.

  • ¤ guvcview : works quite fine, though choppy after a few seconds.

  • ¤ v4l2ucp : thanks to its preview feature (through mplayer; works fine!) preloading v4l2convert.so provided the clue I missed to get an image on Skype video test (used to be plain black).

Still, the video is mirrored on every working software.

As said, preloading l4v1compat.so doesn't change anything.

Also, since my "savior" is l4v2convert.so , perhaps changing the output format to the proper one will allow me not to preload the said lib ?

(Can I change the output format reliably though v4l2ucp or related tools ?)

(OP here) I don't mind the mirror effect in the end... But the video freezing (only) on Skype might drive my user back to some expensive proprietary OS. – Phlo786 Jul 20 '12 at 17:17
