When I insert a DVD or USB drive into the computer it does not open. Are there additional drivers that I need to install? I know the USB drive is working because I installed Ubuntu using it.

It should happen automatically, although there are settings that can disable showing the drives on the desktop. Can you see the drive in Nautilus, or in /media/drive-name? If you can see it, then the problem is one of configuration somewhere. – Marty Fried Jul 7 '12 at 2:42
no i cannot see it. it does not show any 'attach devices' Guess i'll have to reinstall it! Thanks for your help – Wendy Jul 7 '12 at 3:13
There's no need to reinstall. Have you tried to access it via terminal? cd /media then do an ls you should be able to see the drive name from there. – Peachy Jul 7 '12 at 6:05
