Can someone tell me how to download stuff from the web? Like on Windows you have the .exe to help install stuff but on Linux all i get is a folder when i download something. Am I supposed to do something with the folder or am i missing something?

James, you need to revise your question. What stuff are you trying to download? Most browsers have their own download managers to help you download from the web.

When you say .exe that would mean Windows installers. I am assuming you are downloading a installer? If you download a .exe Windows installer you can try to run and install it via Wine.

Linux software (apps) comes in packages. If you download a .deb, you can install it via Ubuntu Software Center or via terminal by running sudo dpkg -i *.deb provided that your current directory is where the .debs are located.

Have you tried downloading it via Software Center? If you cannot find it via Software Center, you have to activate the Canonical Partner repository, then try it again. – Peachy Jul 3 '12 at 2:17

If your using Firefox it will have a downloads page come up then when its finished downloading you have to double click it. It should come up with the install wizard or a page where you can extract the files. Then find the setup or .exe file to start the install if you have to extract. I don't use chrome much so not real sure but I think it shows up at the bottom of the page.

To install the latest Flash player from Adobe (which is what you intend, as I see from your comments), go to their Download page, in "Step 1" select "Linux (32 Bit)" or "Linux (64 Bit)" depending on what you are using, and in "Step 2" select the variant ending in "(apt)". This will download a .deb file, which you then can install using sudo dpkg -i <filename> from the command line, or using the Ubuntu Software Center as msPeachy described.
