Since I've installed Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, I've had no problem typing a single line of code into the terminal at each login to make my touchpad behave the way I want it to
(two finger tap = middle click), because I wasn't bothered by having to memorize said single line of code. But recently, and this might be due to an update, I've been having a problem.
See below:

thevolone@Devolution:~$ xinput set-int-prop 13 268 8 2 3 0 0 1 2 3
X Error of failed request: BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)
Major opcode of failed request: 143 (XInputExtension)
Minor opcode of failed request: 57 ()
Serial number of failed request: 18
Current serial number in output stream: 19

wat do?
