Whenever I try completing this step I just get:

dd: unknown operand if

I've tried this many times with every variation I can think of. Any help?

Are you including an equals sign after if? Please type the exact command in your terminal, and copy and paste both the command and output in your question. Thanks! and welcome to AU! –  izx Jun 26 '12 at 3:21

sudo dd if=/Users/[username]/Downloads/ubuntu-12.10-desktop-i386.img of=/dev/rdisk[N] bs=1m

insert your username and the disk number

Can you add more detail about what this script does and why? –  Seth Jan 4 '13 at 18:21

As @izx said, it can be key to share the exact command you are trying to run. One guess may be you have put a dash in front of the if like this sudo dd -if=/my/path of=/dev/disk2 bs=1m, but you don't use dashes on operands with dd so it should be sudo dd if=/my/path of=/dev/disk2 bs=1m.
