Whenever I try completing this step I just get:

dd: unknown operand if

I've tried this many times with every variation I can think of. Any help?

Are you including an equals sign after if? Please type the exact command in your terminal, and copy and paste both the command and output in your question. Thanks! and welcome to AU! –  izx Jun 26 '12 at 3:21

sudo dd if=/Users/[username]/Downloads/ubuntu-12.10-desktop-i386.img of=/dev/rdisk[N] bs=1m

insert your username and the disk number
